Mounties run, jump, and throw their way to SoCal Women's Track and Field title, set sights on State Championship
MISSION VIEJO – After entering the 3C2A Southern California Finals tied with West Los Angeles College, the Mt. SAC Women's Track and Field Team surged ahead to secure the championship title on Saturday, May 10. With a final score of 137.5 points, the Mounties edged out Riverside (133), followed by San Diego Mesa College (112), Cerritos (107.5), and Orange Coast College (75), rounding out the top five among 21 competing women's teams.
On the track, Leila Champion placed sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.32 seconds. In the middle distances, Kahlai Cruser finished eighth in the 800 meters (2:24.91), while Kaitlyn Reyes took third in the 1500 meters (4:55.07), with teammate Isabella Flores finishing seventh (5:05.37). Reyes also claimed fifth place in the 5000 meters with a time of 19:36.60. In the 10,000-meter event, Tigist Bergman led the Mounties in fourth (38:35.15), followed by Alondra Morales-Espinoza in sixth (39:21.22) and Maya Estrada-Garcia in seventh (39:29.63).
In the hurdles, Carlota Romay Rega took fifth in the 100-meter hurdles (15.40), and Alyssah Johnson followed in seventh (16.05). The pair switched places in the 400-meter hurdles, with Johnson claiming second (1:05.96) and Romay Rega placing third (1:06.64). In the steeplechase, Yadira Arnold finished second (11:59.39), with Ava Cornell close behind in third (12:05.61).
In relay events, the 4x100 meter team of Enessah Hawkins, Cruser, Megan Stauffer, and Champion took fourth place with a time of 47.87 seconds. The 4x400 meter squad—Stauffer, Cruser, Johnson, and Hawkins—also finished fourth in 3:58.88.
In the field events, Romay Rega secured a victory in the high jump, clearing 5' 5". In pole vault, Samantha Diener placed second with a height of 11' 1.75", followed by Sofia Di Marco in fourth 10' 8", Rachel Kessel in sixth 8' 8.25", and Kaylie Duffy in ninth 8' 2.5".
In the triple jump, Alessandra Jefferson earned second place with a leap of 35' 9.5". In the throwing events, Sidney Sparks placed fifth in the hammer throw with a mark of 137', 4", and Araxy Chivchyan came in eighth 130' 10.75". Maya Rush took first place in the javelin with a throw of 149' 10", yet again setting a new school record, and Phoenix Raso finished eighth at 102' 0.25".
In the heptathlon, Romay Rega claimed the title with 3,912 points, narrowly beating out Jefferson, who took second with 3,896 points.
