Robinson wins close heptathlon chase while Aguilar is tops in decathlon at SoCal Multi Championships
NORWALK - Cerritos College sophomore Darlena Robinson edged Charlotte Kraushaar of Orange Coast College by just 36 points to claim first place in the heptathlon, while Mt. San Antonio College freshman Andrew Aguilar charged with a big second day and was victorious in the decathlon at the CCCAA Southern California Multi Championships which concluded at Cerritos on Wednesday.
Robinson tallied 3,937 points in the heptathlon with Kraushaar finishing close behind with 3,901. Robinson's teammate, Daila Bell, trailed Robinson by just 16 points (2,455-2,439) after the first four events on Tuesday with Krushaar was in third with 2,312. But Kraushaar won the javelin by more than 13 feet over Robinson to close the gap with just the 800-meter run remaining but Robinson enjoyed enough of a cushion to take home top honors. Bell finished third overall with 3,784 points while Abby Richey of Cuesta College was fourth with 3,703.
Cerritos won first place in the heptathlon for the fifth year in a row and sixth in the last seven.
Aguilar was in fifth place after the decathlon's first five events on Tuesday. His 3,012 points trailed leader Joshua Godfrey of Southwestern (3,237), But Aguilar tied for second in the 110 high hurdles in 16.46 to start the second day, won the discus with a mark of 121-10 and then tied for first in the pole vault at 12-11.5 to pick up 1,891 points heading into the final two events on his way to the victory.
Vincent Ketelaar of Cuesta was runner-up (5,622), Aaron Mickelsen (5,577) of San Diego Mesa placed third and Riverside City's Jacob Woods (5,557) finished fourth.
Placewinners earned points for their teams for next month's CCCAA State Championships at the College of San Mateo. Cerritos will start with 18 points on the women's side and is followed by Orange Coast (8), Cuesta (5), Mt. SAC (4), Moorpark (3) and Palomar (1). Mt. SAC will start with 10 points in the men's competition with Cuesta (8), Riverside (7), San Diego Mesa (6), El Camino 4, Southwestern (3) and Cerritos (1) also tallying points in the regional multi-events.
