CUPERTINO -- Moreen Pahulu had the longest women's discus throw -- by far -- at the Northern California Community College Track and Field Trials Friday at De Anza College. She leads College of San Mateo qualifiers for next Saturday's finals, also at De Anza.
Pahulu's throw of 142 feet, four inches, was nearly 15-feet ahead of the field and just short of her NorCal season leading mark of 145-6, which ranks second in the state. The CSM sophomore out of Mills High School qualified for finals in two other events, the hammer throw (eight at 145-7) and the javelin throw (11th at 96-11).
San Mateo had a solid group of men throwers advancing to next week's finals. Double Coast Conference champion Aaron Volkman qualified third in the shot put (50-10 1/4) and seventh in the hammer throw (155-1).
Coast javelin champion Scott Chiesa was No. 2 in that event at 192-1, with Alvin Sung advancing in the eighth position at 169-10.
Collin Luu was the No. 3 qualifier in the discus with a season best throw of 156-2, ranking among the state's top ten this year.
On the track, Zach Cantu placed a close second in his heat of the 800 meters in 1 minute, 56.97 seconds to gain an automatic berth in the finals.
For the CSM women, Alejandra Marin qualified for the 1,500 meter finals, running 5:07.39.
Vanessa Siega claimed the final triple jump finals berth with a jump of 33-4. Amanda Lee fell short in the women's long jump with a 15-11 1/2 jump that was 14th.
--In the only men's final of the day, Anthony Cortes placed 14th in the 10,000 meters in 35:02.95.
Saturday's finals at De Anza get underway at 10 a.m. with field events. Running events begin at 1 p.m.
