SBVC WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD CHAMPION TO BE HONORED BY SAN BERNARDINO NAACP
Stewart, a student at Texas Tech and a graduate of Wilmer Amina Carter High School in Rialto will be amongst many honored guests at the San Bernardino Hilton. The President of the San Bernardino branch of the NAACP, Patricia Small, indicated in a letter promoting the event, "Attendees throughout San Bernardino County, will gather to celebrate 'Young Game Changers' who have made outstanding achievements that have positively impacted the Inland Empire and beyond."
"I think it's great that she is being honored by the NAACP," said SBVC Director of Athletics David Rubio, "Shanice is a person of outstanding character and was a pleasure to have her here at SBVC. I hope that she continues striving forward in all of her educational and athletic endeavors."
On May 18th Stewart secured back-to-back state championships in the long jump with a leap of 5.86 meters (19ft 2.5in), the 1st place finish constituted all 10 points for SBVC at the state finals. She competed in most of the Friday events, but was unable to compete for the women's outdoor heptathlon due to injury. Stewart's leap of 5.86 meters this year was her best, even topping her state championship leap of 2012, in which she leapt 5.58 meters (just over 18 feet).
Women's and Men's Track and Field head coach Mike Powell had glowing remarks about Stewart, commenting "she's one of those 'once in a generation' type of athletes, she was the total package of hard work, determination, pain tolerance, being coachable, and a supportive family." Coach Powell also shared that Stewart will text him updates on how practices are going and some of his current student athletes havehad a chance to chat with her via video chat, sharing her experiences at the NCAA Division One level. "Shanice is easily one of the best female athletes to come out of this area in a number of years."
Stewart collected 4 individual titles at the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championships taking first place finishes in the long jump, 100 meter hurdles, high jump, and women's outdoor heptathlon. She also had a second place finish in the shot put and a third place finish in the 100 meter dash. The 3 time All-American in the long jump, women's outdoor heptathlon, and the 100m hurdles has been plagued by an injured ankle all season and still was able to maintain a top three state ranking in four different events.
