Cougars dive into conference season

On Thursday, COC swimmer/diver Alexis Kearns got the diving portion of her season started with a pair of victories at WSC dive meet No. 1, held at L.A. Valley College.
Kearns finished first in both the women's 1-meter and 3-meter dive events, and then came back the following day to participate in WSC Swim Meet No. 1.
At that event, Kearns helped COC take second place in the women's 200-yard medley relay, and later took third place in the women's 50-yard freestyle event.
The meet, which was hosted by Canyons and held at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center, included swimmers from Allan Hancock, Cuesta, L.A. Pierce and Ventura College.
For scoring purposes, the four schools squared off against each other in a dual-meet format.
The COC women's team won three of its four matchups, but narrowly lost to L.A. Pierce 440-399.
However, the Cougars ended the day with an exciting first-place finish in the women's 200 free relay. In the final event of the meet, the team of Alyssa San Lucas, Georgia Rios, Siris Pinget and Alyssa Velasquez defeated the Pierce squad by three hundredths of a second (1:54.93 to 1:54.96).
Canyons sophomore Tyson Brandi also took first place in the women's 100 butterfly.
COC had some strong performances on the men's side, but managed to win just one of its four matchups.
Sophomore Philip Wong led the way for Canyons, finishing first in the 100 breaststroke, taking second in the 100 butterfly and swimming anchor for the 200 medley relay team, which took second place.
