COM swimmer takes second in state meet
COM sophomore Raquel Newman, who finished eighth in the state in the 50-yard breaststroke last year, improved to a second-place finish in the race this year during the California State Community College Swimming and Diving Championships on Friday in Los Angeles.
Newman finished the race in 30.49 seconds, a figure bested only by a state-meet record effort from Diablo Valley College's Shalia Yoder (29.43).
Newman will race again Saturday, competing in the 100 breaststroke.
"Last year when she took eighth, she was a seasonal swimmer," COM coach Warren Lager said of Newman. "She trained all year round for this meet and it showed."
