VICTORVILLE: After finishing in second place the last three seasons, Fresno City College pulled out their state-leading 14th team championship, as they amassed 158.5 team points at the CCCAA State Championships, which were held at Victor Valley College. The Rams pulled away from second place Cerritos College, who came in second place with 153.5 points, and advanced five of their six semifinalists into the championship round. By contrast, the Falcons, who came in as the state's top-ranked team, only advanced two of their six into the finals. Cerritos opened the day with a one-point lead, while the success of the Rams gave them a 31-point lead at one point. Last month, Cerritos defeated Fresno City for the CCCAA Team Dual State Championship.
"The guys really came together and I'm very proud of their effort," said Fresno City head coach Paul Keysaw. "Coming in second place (at the state championships) the last three years was good motivation."
As a coach, Keysaw has now led Fresno City (six state championships) and Moorpark College (three championships) to nine total in his career. He also has a trio of second place finishes under his belt and a third place in his 11 seasons with the Rams.
With their two individual champions, Fresno City now has 75 career champions, with Cerritos improving to 58 with their two titles. Both Falcon wins came against the Rams.
In a strange twist, four of the 10 weights featured competitors from the same school, including Palomar (133 pounds), Mt. San Antonio (141 pounds), Fresno City (149 pounds) and Sacramento City (184 pounds). It was five seasons ago that schools could qualify two wrestlers in two different weight classes. It was a three-team race for third place, with Sacramento City, Mt. San Antonio and Palomar battling it out. All three were guaranteed one individual state champion, as each school had teammates facing each other in the finals.
In the end, Sacramento City finished in third place, followed closely by Palomar (114 team points) and Mt. San Antonio (113.5 team points).
Below is a quick breakdown of each championship match:
