Mt. SAC Captures Inaugural CCCAA Wrestling Dual Team State Championship

(Walnut, CA) The Mt. SAC Mounties Wrestling Team captured the first ever California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Wrestling Dual Team State Championship, by the narrowest of margins in ANY sport, over visiting Sacramento City College.  Both teams finished the championship match with a 19-19 tie.  Using the NCAA Wrestling tie break rules, the first four criteria (team wins, falls, tech falls and major decisions) were equal between the two teams.  The tie was finally broken by total match points, with the Mounties prevailing by a mere 3 points, 43 to 40.

The exciting match began with 3 consecutive Mountie wins in the lower weight classes, however the middle weight classes (149 lbs., 157 lbs., 165 lbs., 174 lbs.) all went to the Panthers.  The two teams split the next two weight classes, with the 184 lbs. weight class going to the Mounties in overtime and the 197 lbs. weight class going to the Panthers.    

Coming into the final match, the Mounties trailed the Panthers by 4 team points, 19-16.  Sophomore heavyweight Nadel Abdullatif was once again given the task to lead his team to victory.  Abdullatif, dominated his match garnering 3 takedowns in the first period, a takedown and a two point nearfall in the second and an escape, takedown and ridetime point in the 3rd period to earn the 14-3 major decision to give the Mounties four additional team points to tie the score at 19.  

After sorting through the first four NCAA Tie Breaking Criteria with no tie break and after much anticiaption, the official announcement named the Mounties, the inaugural Dual Team State Champions.

125 lbs. = Christian Bettancourt (Mt. SAC) defeats Albert Landeros (SCC) with a regular decision, 8-2.

133 lbs. = Nathan Pike (Mt. SAC) defeats Anthony Sakaoka (SCC) by Fall (Pin) in the third period.

141 lbs. = Anthony Duran (Mt. SAC) defeats Laith Alnassir (SCC) by regular decision, 5-1.  

149 lbs. = Will upson (SCC) defeats Jonathan Hernandez (Mt. SAC) by major decision, 12-2.

157 lbs. = Taylor Hodel (SCC) defeats Marcos Villarreal (Mt. SAC) by regular decision, 4-1.

165 lbs. = Tyson Kuahine (SCC) defeats Cyrus Sanai (Mt. SAC) by regular decision, 3-1.

174 lbs. = Alex Campos-Chambers (SCC) defeats Brody Goens (Mt. SAC) by Fall (Pin) in the first period.

184 lbs. = Jared Matanane (Mt. SAC) defeats Allen Emmons (SCC) by regular decision, 6-4.

197 lbs. = Hudson Buck (SCC) defeats Vernon Willis (Mt. SAC) by regular decision, 11-6.

Heavyweight = Nadel Abdullatif (Mt. SAC) defeats Jesse Lucero (SCC) by major decision, 14-3.
