Steady goes it atop CCCSIA Women's Basketball Poll with top eight teams holding serve
SACRAMENTO - Palomar College and Orange Coast College kept their undefeated records intact and most of the rest of the top 10 kept pace, according to the second California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) Women's Basketball Poll released on Wednesday.
In fact, the top seven teams held onto their spots while only eight points separate No. 8 Moorpark (15-5) and No. 9 City College of San Francisco (15-4), which were tied for the eighth spot last week. Otherwise, status quo was the name of the game above them in the rankings with Palomar (17-0), which garnered all nine first-place votes, staying at No. 1, Orange Coast (19-0) right behind the Comets at No. 2 and Fresno City and Santa Rose, both 18-2, keeping tabs at No. 3 and No. 4 respectively.
College of the Sequoias (17-2) is at No. 5 ahead of their Central Valley Conference showdown at Fresno City on Saturday which could provide some shakeup in next week's top 10. Butte (16-3), San Joaquin Delta (13-4), Moorpark, CCSF, and Mt. San Jacinto (17-2) round out the top 10. Eight different conferences are included in the top 10 with both the CVC and Big 8 (Santa Rosa, San Joaquin Delta) contributing two teams each.
Mt. San Antonio (13-7), Ventura (14-5), Laney (14-5), Cypress (14-5) and Folsom Lake (14-4) comprise the 10th through 14th places while Irvine Valley (15-5), Long Beach City (12-6), Riverside City (15-5) and Glendale (14-4) cover the next four. Sierra (10-8) and San Jose City (15-4) are tied for 20th.
There weren't a lot of big jumps in the rankings this week. Irvine Valley, which has won three straight and five of its last six games, went from No. 20 to No. 15 while Glendale, currently on a five-game winning streak, entered the poll at No. 19 after being listed among others receiving votes in the Jan. 9 rankings.
The California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) released its region rankings with Palomar leading SoCal with Orange Coast at No. 2, and just a point separating No. 1 Santa Rosa and No. 2 Fresno City in the North.
