Moorpark College races to undefeated record and parks atop the CCCWBCA poll
MOORPARK - The Moorpark College women's basketball team is off to a hot start. The Raiders are winners of 10 straight, including Saturday's 88-39 win over tournament-host Santa Ana in the final, giving the team its third straight tournament victory.
The Raiders also won the Riverside and Saddleback tournaments, respectively.
Barbara Rangel scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in Saturday's victory, while point guard Breanna Calhoun notched a game-high 20 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists.
Rangel, a recent University of Hawaii commit, was named tournament MVP, and Emily Herring was named to the all-tournament team. The tournament journey included wins over Merced (71-55) and Bakersfield (90-52), respectively. Rangel, a 6-foot-2 center, is the reigning Western State (North) Conference MVP and currently averaging 17.9 points and 13.7 rebounds per contest to lead the Raiders.
Moorpark (10-0) will take the floor next at home on Dec. 8 against Mt. San Jacinto.
The strong start to the 2018-19 has propelled the Raiders into what is believed their first time as the state's top-ranked team. Moorpark garnered eight first-place votes and 291 total points to edge Diablo Valley for No. 1. College of the Sequoias, L.A. Trade-Tech and East Los Angeles round out the top five.
