Moorpark, Diablo Valley top teams in sports information directors' first poll of 2019
PASADENA - Moorpark College tops the 2019 first California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) Women's Basketball State Top 20 Rankings by just five points over No. 2 Diablo Valley.
The Raiders (18-1) are tied for the state's most victories and are poised to try to end No. 16 Ventura's amazing 28-year Western State Conference title win streak. Moorpark is also No. 1 in state RPI at .669. Diablo Valley is the last of the undefeated at 18-0, and the Big 8's Vikings matched Moorpark in first place votes (six each).
Merced (16-2) rolls in at No. 3 on the poll while fellow Central Valley Conference foe College of the Sequoias (17-2) stands at No. 4. The Giants, the champion of their 16-team, Gilcrest Invitational, received the other first place vote this week.
The next three teams are all from the powerful South Coast Conference North Division in No. 5 LA Trade Tech (17-3), No. 6 East Los Angeles (17-4), and No. 7 Pasadena City (15-3). City College of San Francisco (12-2) is at No. 8, then San Joaquin Delta (15-4) No. 9 and a fourth SCC North team--Mt. San Antonio (14-5) at No. 10.
Moorpark's only loss this year was when its 16-game win streak was snapped in the final of the East LA Tournament by the champion host #6 Huskies. ELAC followed that and along with Pasadena City each won their 8-team brackets in the first Crossover Challenge Tournament, which featured 12 teams that were ranked in the SoCal Region coaches poll. East LA beat tourney host and #12 El Camino in the Blue Bracket final while PCC upset Trade Tech in the White Bracket championship.
After DVC, the state's current longest win streaks belong to Sequoias (14 in a row) and Merced (won 11 straight).
The North region conferences all began their conference schedules with the most significant early leaders so far being Diablo Valley at 6-0 to top the Big 8 and unranked Solano at 4-0 to lead the Bay Valley. In the South region, only the Orange Empire has begun its conference schedule.
