DELTA WINS CSM TOM MARTINEZ INV; BULLDOGS FINISH SIXTH AFTER 3 CLOSE CONTESTS
TITLE CONTESTS:
San Joaquin Delta (10-3), ranked No. 13 in the state, won the title in the 8-team statewide event, crushing Reedley, 97-55, in the finale – with tournament MVP Brittany Butler scoring 13 points. Delta beat Santa Monica, 92-62, in the opener and then downed Contra Costa, 87-75, in the semifinals. Butler, a 5-5 sophomore guard, had 59 points in the tournament, including 28 against Contra Costa. Reedley (6-6) had comeback in the final minutes to beat CSM, 57-51, in the tournament opener
Down, 44-34, against Santa Monica (8-6) in the third quarter, San Mateo (5-6) put on a 13-point run for a 47-44 lead after three periods. CSM made it an 18-2 run, paced by nine Elzy points, to go up 52-47 with 6:30 left in the game. But the pressing Corsairs took over from there to capture the victory. Corryne Millett led CSM with 20 points and 11 rebounds, her second double-double of the tournament. The 6-1 sophomore totaled 44 points and 33 rebounds in the tournament. The 6-0 Elzy had 15 points and 11 rebounds for tourney totals of 44 points and 33 boards.
CSM will finish out its 2016 “home” slate on Thursday (Dec. 22), hosting Gavilan (8-2) at 6 p.m. in a Coast Conference crossover game.
