CCCAA STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS March 11, 2016 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
EAST LA UPSETS NO. 1 NORTH SEED CCSF, 51-47 IN CCAA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SEMIFINAL
LIVERMORE -- Allissa Gomez had 20 points, eight in the final quarter, as East Los Angeles College upset No 1 Northern California seed, City College of San Francisco 51-47, in the semifinals of the California Community College Athletic Association Women's Basketball Tournament Friday evening at Las Positas College in Livermore.
East LA (24-9), the No. 6 seed from the Southern California regionals, will play the winner of the Mt. San Antonio-Fresno City College semifinal in Sunday's 1 p.m. championship game.
Down by 14 at 32-18 at the start of the second half, CCSF (28-4) came back to regain the lead at 39-38 at the beginning of the fourth quarter -- on a lay-in by state player of the year Gabrielle Vigil.
East LA took the lead for good with 5:18 left on a free throw by Gomez – part of a 6-point Huskies' run that made it 47-43 with 2:48 remaining. CCSF would not go away, however. Another Vigil basket cut the deficit to two. The final exchange of field goals made it 49-47 with 1:38 remaining -- but the drive by CCSF guard Cassidy Chan proved to be the final Rams bucket. CCSF failed to connect on four opportunities during the final minute while Gomez padded the lead at the free throw line.
"We knew the teams were very similar," said East LA coach Bruce Turner. "When I saw them on film, I said 'boy, we play just alike.' We didn't press tonight because we didn't have to, so we were ready for their press. But we didn't execute as well as I would have liked."
Brianne Cheatum had 11 points and Jessica Sanchez had 16 rebounds for the Huskies.
Danielle Palmer led San Francisco with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Vigil had 11 points.
There were six lead changes and the score was tied eight times.
CCSF brought a 17-game win streak into the semifinals, dating to a 78-74 loss to Diablo Valley College on Dec. 27. Conversely East LA had lost its final South Coast Conference game, 71-70, at Los Angeles Trade-Tech before defeating three strong opponents in the state regionals. That included a 76-65 region final win over No. 2 South seed Mt. San Jacinto, which had lost only one game all season.
--This will be East LA's first appearance in the state finals. "Sunday will be historic for our program, so since we're in it we may as well try and win it," said Turner.
East Los Angeles finished second in the South Coast Conference North Division behind No. 1 Southern California seed Mt. SAC. San Francisco was the champion of the Coast North Conference.
