Solano Falls to Laney, Can't Clinch Outright Title
The Solano College women's basketball team lost out on the opportunity to clinch an outright Bay Valley Conference championship on Wednesday night as Laney held off the host Falcons 45-37.
Solano had hoped to clinch in the home finale but went scoreless in the final 2:11 of the game. Laney closed the action out with a 10-0 run and the victory.
The Falcons can share the title with Laney by earning a victory on Friday at winless Mendocino. Solano is now 11-4 in the BVC and 18-9 overall. Laney has a bye on Friday, and finished the regular season 12-4 in conference and 18-10 overall.
"With everything we've gone through, we'd be happy to have a conference championship," Solano head coach Matt Borchert said. "To be able to say that would be awesome. We still have a chance to win a conference plaque and hang a banner. The girls deserve that much."
Solano had a chance to pull out a win, even after a 17-point first half. The Falcons trailed 33-25 with 10:24 left in the game when Adrianna Jones started to heat up for the Falcons. She hit a pair of 3-pointers and had eight points during a 12-3 run that gave Solano a 37-35 lead with 4:37 remaining. But the Falcons couldn't get the big basket down the stretch.
"I think it just showed where we are right now," Borchert said. "We lack the depth and we don't handle the man pressure. We don't get into transition and we don't shoot many free throws."
Laura Lawson led the Falcons with 12 points. Jenessa Boling scored nine and Jones finished with eight. Lawson, the state leader in rebounds, pulled down nine on the night. Boling added six rebounds.
Solano grabbed an early 9-6 lead in the first half on three 3-pointers, two by Boling. But Laney went on a 12-3 run for an 18-11 lead with 6:09 to play in the half. The teams exchanged baskets the rest of the half and Laney held a 23-17 lead at the break.
The Falcons didn't warm up during halftime and still came out hot in the second half. A 7-0 run to open the half gave them a 24-23 lead with 16:54 to play. But Laney took over and picked up the win.
Solano honored sophomores Kai Roberts, Danika Carlisle, Jones, Nikki Andaya and Lawson before the game.
