Redwoods opens GVC play with a convincing 98-68 win over Feather River

Six players scored in double figures as the College of the Redwoods women's basketball team blew out Feather River College 98-68 on Wednesday night.

Redwoods sophomore point guard Lili Herrera led the way with 19 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Darnesha Ward added three 3s and scored 15, while Hannah Hurley also finished with 15. Sheila Christy and Darby Dutra each had 12 and Lili Jarnaghan scored 11.

The Lady Corsairs finished with 11 3-pointers in the ballgame.

Although the 3-pointers were falling for the Corsairs, the bulk of their points were a direct result of their defensive pressure.

"The big key for our offense was how hard we played defensively to create transition opportunities," said CR head coach Doug Oliveira. "I couldn't have asked them to play any harder than they did."

The two teams played even early in the first half with both sides hitting two 3-pointers to start the action.

With the score still close midway through the first half, Dutra (McKinleyville) provided a spark that ignited the entire team.

Dutra hit two 3s and scored all 12 of her points before the break, spurring the Corsairs to a 25-point halftime lead.

"We felt like this was the most important game of the year for us and I thought we did a great job inside getting in the passing lanes and interrupting their timing," Oliveira said. "It really was a total team effort tonight."

The Corsairs hit seven first-half 3-pointers, putting up 55 points before the break for the second time this year.

With the win, the Corsairs improve to 1-0 in the GVC and 5-11 overall, while Feather River drops to 0-1 in conference and 4-11 overall.

Redwoods will play two games on the road next week at Siskiyous on Jan. 16 and at Butte Jan. 18.
