Edwards, Webster bring home SoCal heptathlon/decathlon titles
CERRITOS, Calif. – Moorpark College took an early lead in the men's race for the upcoming Southern California Track and Field Championships, and Cerritos College raced out to a big lead in the women's thanks to strong showings on Tuesday and Wednesday in the decathlon and heptathlon competitions at Cerritos College.
Sophomore Elisha Edwards scored 6,264 points for Moorpark to capture the decathlon title, giving the Raiders 10 points for the regional meet which is scheduled for May 6 (trials) and May 13 (finals), also at Cerritos. Moorpark will enter the regional championships with 10 points while Cuesta College, which was paced by Aaron Cheek's 6,189 points, will start with eight.
Defending state champion Juanita Webster of Cerritos successfully defended her regional title in the heptathlon, leading a parade of four Falcons in the top eight while scoring a school-record 5,471 points. Breanna Curry (3rd, 4,591 pts), Michaela Banyi (4th, 4,415 pts) and Amani Briggs (7th, 4,081 pts) were other Cerritos standouts to pick up points.
The combined finishes for Cerritos gives the Falcons 23 points, well ahead of Canyons which scored eight points behind Jasmine Hall's runner-up (4,704 pts) showing.
Edwards won four events on his way to the decathlon title, capturing first place in the 100-meter dash (11.07), high jump (1.79m), 400 (50.72) and 110HH (14.71). Webster was similarly dominant in the heptathlon by capturing five of them: 100H (13.99), high jump (1.75m), long jump (5.58m), javelin (41.32m) and 800 (2:23.13).
