Jensen's big bat leads College of the Redwoods to softball sweep
The left-fielder is perfect at the plate in pair of games against Shasta
Hitting a pitched ball is considered one of the toughest acts in all of sports. Even the best players are only successful a little more than 30 percent of the time.
So, when a batter has a day like Karyn Jensen did on May 6 for College of the Redwoods, it turns some heads.
Playing in a doubleheader against Shasta College, Jensen was 7-for-7 with three doubles, five runs batted in, four runs scored and a stolen base as Redwoods swept the two games over Shasta 11-0 (5 innings) and 6-2.
The second-year freshman who graduated from Eureka High School has been a fixture in the No. 3 spot in Redwoods' lineup this year. She is hitting .425 on the year, with a .550 slugging percentage, knocking home nine runners overall. In her Covid-shortened first season, she hit .350 in 19 games, and led the team with two homers and 16 RBI.
A left fielder, Jensen is majoring in child development at Redwoods, and has posted a 3.85 grade point average. Her work on and off the field has already earned her nominations for all-academic honors, according to coach Maggie White.
"Karyn is a true student-athlete who works hard in the classroom and on the field," White said of Jensen. "College of the Redwoods was fortunate she opted to stay close to home and play softball as she had other solid options."
