No. 2 Bulldogs have already beaten No. 1 Mt. SAC & No. 3 Sierra

SAN MATEO -- Jamie Madigan started the day with a first inning home run and ended it scoring the mercy rule walkoff run on a single by Rachel Moran as College of San Mateo swept Sierra College, 5-0, and College of the Siskiyous, 8-0, Thursday afternoon in home season softball openers.

CSM got a pair of complete game shutouts from its starting pitchers. Emily McAdams (2-0) held Sierra scoreless over seven innings of the first game, scattering four hits, striking out six, and walking just one. Kaitlyn Grech, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and scored a run as designated player against Sierra, made her first mound appearance of the season against Siskiyous (0-2) and blanked the Eagles over the 6-inning game.

"Our pitchers were great and we played pretty good defense behind them," said CSM coach Nicole Borg.

CSM (4-1), ranked No. 2 in the state in the coaches association preseason poll, had started in the Bakersfield 3-way invitational last weekend, beating No. 1 Mt. San Antonio College (the reigning state champions), 6-5.

Sierra was No. 3 in the preseason poll so the No. 2 Bulldogs have already topped No. 1 and No. 3 – including their top foes in both the south and north!

Freshman Riley Donovan was a "perfect" 3-for-3 with a single, double, and triple against Sierra. She also had a Sacrifice fly and a double against Siskiyous, each for RBIs.

Sierra (1-1) defeated Siskiyous, 9-1 in six innings in the other game of Thursday's triple header on CSM's synthetic turf field. The three games were moved up a day due to predicted rain.

(Feb. 1, 2019 update)

SWEEP COMPLETED: CSM completed a sweep of Siskiyous with a 7-1 win the next morning, however, and did not allow an earned run over the 3-games.

Kaylyn Sterling smacked a 2-run home run over centerfield fence to start a 5-run sixth inning which, effectively, put the game away. Starter Brittany Prock (2-1) pitched five innings for the win, facing just 17 batters.

The current CSM win streak is 4 games: 3-0 at home and 3-0 vs. Northern California teams to date.

Next: San Mateo visits Merced Tuesday (Feb. 5) for two games, starting at 12 noon.

--CSM will next play at home Saturday, Feb. 9, hosting College of the Redwoods (10 a.m.) and American River (2 p.m.).
