Glendora, CA - After dropping a hotly contested opening round match-up late last night in Walnut to NorCal No. 2 Sierra College, the SoCal No. 3 Cypress College softball program rebounded on Friday afternoon in Glendora with a 7-1 win over San Joaquin Delta College. The win means the Chargers will survive for at least another game, while the Mustangs of Delta are eliminated from the 2018 CCCAA Softball State Championships.
Cypress jumped out to an early lead and didn't really look back. The Chargers scored a trio of runs in the top of the first inning, one via a Mustang error and the other two off the bat of sophomore Tianna Harris who hit a two-RBI single back up the middle of the field. In the top of the fifth, freshman Gabrielle Munoz hit an RBI single to make it 4-0 Cypress.
In the bottom of the fifth, San Joaquin Delta would get an RBI double to right-center from freshman Sam Martinez, but the Chargers scored three more runs in the top of the seventh on a two-RBI single by sophomore Kiani Puailoa and another Mustang error. Charger sophomore pitcher Hailey Hoffman (14-12) slammed the door on the Delta offense, as she got three pop-ups to end the game.
Hoffman was rather dominant pitching a complete game, while surrendering just three hits and no walks. Hoffman also struck out one in the effort. For Cypress, sophomore Kellee Ross was 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI. Sophomore Sydney McCollum was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs.
Cypress will take on El Camino College at 4:30 PM this afternoon back at Mt. San Antonio College, in another elimination contest. The Warriors lost to tournament host Mt. SAC 10-3 a few moments after the Charger win.
