TORRANCE, Calif. – The ECC softball team (29-9, 16-3) clinched at least a share of the South Coast Conference title on Thursday with a 4-1 victory at Long Beach City (13-25-1, 6-14).
It is the first SCC title for the Warriors since 1989 and just the second in school history. The Warriors can win the title outright with a win at home on Friday vs. Mt. SAC at 3 p.m. ECC has a two-game lead over the Mounties with two games remaining.
It was a pitcher's duel the first four innings between Sierra Gabriel (Rolling Hills HS) for ECC and Mary Gonzales for LBCC. The Warriors were held hitless until the fifth.
In the fifth with two outs and two on, sophomore Reina Trejo (Torrance HS) doubled to right field driving in Kristen Romero (South Torrance HS).
An error on Dani Bonsky's (Lawndale HS) at bat drove in two more. Marissa Padilla's (Santa Monica HS) RBI single gave the Warriors their fourth run of the inning.
The Vikings wouldn't go down without a fight, getting one back in the seventh on an RBI groundout.
Gabriel got the win for the Warriors to improve to 11-1 on the year. She allowed just one run, unearned, in 6.0 innings.
Trejo got the save in relief, her first of the year.
