Bakersfield, CA -- Sierra College's Kalyn Paque pitched a complete game three hitter, fanning seven batters and leading the Wolverines to the semi-finals of the 2014 California Community College Athletic Association State Softball Championships. Paque gave up just one run and scattered four walks, as Sierra moved to within a pair of wins of their first ever State Title.
Friday night's game was a marked contrast from the earlier contest. After seeing a total of five balls leave the park in the first contest, the late game was a pitcher's duel with Santiago Canyons' Carly Wade and Sierra's Paque going toe to toe. The Wolverines mustered just two base runners through the first four innings, and the Hawks just three through the first three.
Santiago Canyon would finally breakthrough in the bottom of the fourth. The Hawks got a leadoff single from Sydney Abounassar. Pinch runner Devyn Waldron would move to second on a passed ball, and then score two pitches later when Desiree Rasco laced a double to right-center, breaking the scoreless tie.
Sierra meanwhile would take a little longer. The Wolverines got back to back singles from Ashleigh Stidman and Kasie Trezona in the top of the sixth. The next two batters popped up and struck out, but the Wolverines got a line with the fifth batter of the inning when a pop up to the pitcher was flubbed. The error would sting as Wade hit the next better, allowing the Wolverines to tie the game up at one all.
The Wolverines continued to hang in there and would eventually take the lead in the top of the seventh, as they would be the recipient of more Hawks miscues. Sydni Scott got things going with a leadoff single, but after that it was errors by Santiago Canyon. Scott advanced to second on what should have been a fielder's choice, but ended up with the throw to second in right-center.
Two groundouts later, Scott was scoring, and Sierra was up 2-1. The Wolverines got one more for good measure in the next at bat, when another infield popup was mishandled leading to a 3-1 lead. In the bottom half, Paque (21-1) gave up a lead-off walk, and then bore down, getting a pair of ground outs and a pop up.
For Sierra, Scott was 1 for 3 with a score, as was Stidman. For the Hawks, Rascon was 1 for 3 with an RBI.
With the win, Sierra advances to the semi-finals where they will take on Mt. San Antonio College at 3:00 PM. Santiago Canyon College meanwhile falls to the elimination round where they will take on College of San Mateo at approximately 5:30 PM.
