SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - West Valley overcame a four-goal deficit in the first half on Friday morning and then rallied to force overtime as it downed Long Beach City College, 11-10, to advance to the title game of the 2017 California Community College Athletic Association Men's Water Polo Championship at Cuesta College.
West Valley (31-2), looking for its first state championship since 2010, will face the winner of Friday's second semifinal between Sierra and Golden West at noon on Saturday. Long Beach (20-7) will play for third place on Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Myles Martinez scored twice for Long Beach early on as it took a 4-0 lead just two minutes into the second quarter. But West Valley - like LBCC nicknamed the Vikings - rallied to eventually take a 6-5 lead with 5:01 left in the third quarter on a score by Enrico De Munno.
The game was tied inside of three minutes to play in regulation but goals by Karlo Krmek of Long Beach and then Ashuath Balgovind of West Valley kept the game knotted and sent it to overtime. Tyler Breen put back-to-back goals in the first extra period for West Valley which never trailed in overtime and withstood several attempts by Long Beach to tie the game, including getting a key defensive stop in the game's final 30 seconds.
DeMunno led West Valley with four goals while Martinez had three for Long Beach. Both goalies played exceptionally well with Long Beach's Carl Matthews posting 10 saves and West Valley's Marko Kruska had 14.
