Orange Coast keeps hold of top billing in volleyball rankings
IRVINE, Calif. - There wasn’t much movement in the California Community College Men’s Volleyball Coaches Association State poll from week nine to 10.
The only actual change in the poll this week was Santa Monica taking over the fourth spot from El Camino.
But conference races started to be defined all over the state.
Orange Coast received every vote to be named No. 1 for the second consecutive week. The Pirates have now won 13 matches in a row. They swept No. 8 Golden West, 25-18, 25-17, 25-23, last Friday at home after hitting an impressive .455 as a team. Jordan Hoppe had 12 kills and Justin Kam had 11 kills and hit .625 in the victory.
Orange Coast leads the Orange Empire Conference with a record of 5-0.
No. 2 Irvine Valley had its hands full with sixth-ranked Fullerton on the road last Wednesday. The Lasers had to win the final two sets to squeak out a 26-24, 22-25, 25-27, 25-18, 15-13 victory.
Third-ranked Long Beach City remained undefeated in Western State Conference – South Division play with a tough 3-2 win at No. 5 El Camino last Friday. Long Beach won the first two sets with El Camino battling back to take the next two. LBCC earned the hard-fought victory with a 15-13 triumph in set five. Travis O’Gorman and Cyrus Fa’alogo each had 20 kills for Long Beach City, while Cesar Medina ended with 20 kills for the Warriors.
It will be a war between Long Beach City, No. Santa Monica and El Camino in the WSC - South the rest of the way.
Ninth-ranked Moorpark moved to 3-0 in the WSC – North and Miramar took control of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference at 4-0 with a five-set win over Grossmont last Tuesday.
