CCCAA Men's and Women's Track and Field Championships return to College of San Mateo this weekend

SAN MATEO - Northern California champion track and field teams from Hartnell College (women) and American River (men) face off against South champions Cerritos (women) and Riverside (men) in the 2019 California Community College Athletic Association championships Friday and Saturday, May 17-18, at College of San Mateo’s College Heights Stadium. The meet returns to CSM for the fourth time since 2007.
Regional runners up Sacramento CC and Riverside CC the women’s regional runners up, along with Mt. San Antonio and College of the Sequoias for the men also expect to be in the title mix.
Mt. SAC swept both titles at the 2018 championships held at Bakersfield College, setting records for highest men’s team score (160 points) highest women’s score (169 points).
Cerritos hopes to rebound after winning three consecutive women’s titles from 2015-2017.
WEATHER IMPACT: Due to threatening weather forecast for Saturday, the men’s and women’s pole vault finals have been moved to Friday (starting at 11 a.m.), when drier weather is expected.
--Competition gets underway early with the women’s heptathlon 100 meter hurdles at 9 a.m. featuring Northern California champion and favorite Hannah Smrt of Yuba College, the only woman in the field with a season score over 4,000 points (4,354) for the seven event disciplines.
--The men’s decathlon field is headed by a pair of 6,000-point scoring athletes, NorCal champion Dylan Bouziges of De Anza (6,186) and runner-up Bret Lombardi of American River (6,178).
Only two final races are on Friday, the women’s 10,000 meters at 11 a.m. and the men’s 10K at 12 noon. Competition both days goes from 9 a.m. to just past 5 p.m. The 10K races have the 2018 champions returning, both from Mt. SAC: Rebecca Ruiz for the women and Salvador Capetillo for the men. Capetillo will also defend his 5,000 meter title on Saturday.
LIVE STREAM & TV COVERAGE: Saturday running events begin at 12:20 p.m. with the women’s 3,000 meter steeplechase. Some outstanding sprint races are scheduled starting at 3 p.m. with the 100 meter events, which will also be shown live on Eleven Sports Next digital platform. Those final two plus hours of the meet are also scheduled for a delayed telecast on ELEVEN SPORTS USA, available on national cable outlets such as DirecTV and AT&T U-verse.
--The meet will be streamed live on baosn.tv, Friday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., and Saturday, starting at 12 noon, until conclusion.
FOCUS ON SPEED:
Antonio Mitchell of Riverside returns to defend his state 100 meter title and leads all California CC men with a 10.12 season best (No. 2 nationally among community college sprinters). Riverside also has three 100 finalists, including SoCal runner-up Jabriel Smith (10.34) and fourth place Jamal Palmer (10.57). They key the Tigers’ regional champion 40.17 4 x 100 meter relay team, which also looks to repeat as state winners. Mitchell was also the south’s 200 meter champion at 20.71. He faces competition from runner-up and state season leader Daniel Stokes of Cerritos at 20.52 and NorCal champion Myles Ellis of American River (21.31 best).
The women’s sprints feature double NorCal champion Yan-Jan (Sophie) Liao of host College of San Mateo, with a wind-legal 100 meter best of 11.75, against the Cerritos duo of SoCal champ Kenyla Miles (11.74 legal) and runner-up Kierra King (11.75). King and Miles both have wind-aided bests of 11.60 vs. 11.69 for Liao.
In the 200 meters, So Cal champ King is the state leader with a legal 24.15 and a wind-aided 23.77 mark. Liao is No. 2 at 24.41 Miles is No. 3 at 24.53 (and 24.17 wind-aided).
King is the defending state champion in the long jump and won the SoCal title last week at 19-9 1/2 over state leader Holly Stallman of San Diego Mesa, who has jumped 20-0 1/4. They’ll contest that event on Friday. Yuba heptathlete Smrt is also the NorCal long jump champ, with a best of 18-7 1/4.
Other defending state champions in the 2019 field:
--Brenda R-Coria of West Los Angeles, the national community college leader in the women’s 1,500 meters (4:30.76) and Carson Bix of El Camino in the men’s 1,500. The latter race features current national leader Chris Weiland of Mt. San Antonio at 3:53.58. Coria will also defend her title in the 5,000 meters, where she ranks No. 2 nationally at 17:14.96.
Another national leader in the meet is SoCal women’s 400 meter hurdles champion Alia Scott of Cerritos at 59.98.
--Host CSM has state leader Taina Livai in a Friday concluding event, the women’s javelin throw, at 4 p.m. Her best is 129-6, set in winning the NorCal crown.
