Alvin Sung was a big winner for College of San Mateo with a javelin throw of 194 feet at the Northern California Track & Field Championships at Chabot College on Saturday.
The sophomore out of Mills High won by nearly 15 feet over Haile Filmon (179-7) of San Jose and took over the state lead among active athletes headed to the state finals.
The best throw at the Southern California championships was 188-1 by Chris Ross of San Diego Mesa College, which will be the host site for the CCCAA state championships, Friday and Saturday (May 20-21). Ross improved his best by nearly ten feet and won the SoCal title by a 14-foot margin.
CSM also had strong performances in the other throws with Jerry Johnson and William Rogers. Johnson was second in the shot put at 51 feet, 9 inches, and Rogers third (51-3) behind champion Ryan Donahoe (52-10 3/4) of Yuba. Johnson also qualified for the state finals in the discus throw with a fourth place 153-9 (No. 7 in the state this year). All of those Bulldogs marks were season bests and rank among the top ten in the state.
Mirka Uhlirova, who had qualified for the state finals in the women's 10,000 meters a week ago, added the 5,000 meters by finishing fifth in 18:59.45. She ranks 11th nationally among community college runners with her season best of 18:04.18.
Kristen Jacobs placed sixth in the women's 1,500 meters in a personal best 5:08.51. That does not meet the state meet qualifying standard, however. Coast Conference champion Malena Grover of Hartnell won in 4:35.47. The top three finishers posted the state's best times to date.
--CSM freshman Nick Pallas last month qualified for the state finals in the men's decathlon, which will be conducted on Friday and Saturday.
The top six placers (in non-lane events), if they met state "A" standards during the season, qualified for the state finals.
