Modesto hammer throwers dominate at Big 8 meet

The Modesto Junior College Pirates, hosts for the Big 8 Conference Track and Field Championships this week, have impressed their guests in the hammer throw.
Sophomore Daniel Roberts, a three-time state champion as a freshman, led a 1-2-3-4 MJC sweep in the hammer with a throw of 198 feet, 11 inches, on Monday. Erick Loomis was second with a more than respectable 193-3.
Deaven Booker placed second in the javelin and high jump for the MJC men, who sit in second place in the team standings.
MJC sophomore Breanna Lowther captured the women's hammer title (139 -1/2 ). The Pirate women lead American River by a point going into the meet's final day Thursday. Field events begin at 1:30 p.m. and track events at 3 at MJC Stadium.
