MJC's Richard wins 200 IM at state swim finals
LOS ANGELES — Tim Richard's brilliant performance last week at the Big 8 Conference Swimming Championships — three Modesto Junior College and two league records — turned out to be just a warmup.
Richard became the 10th MJC swimming/diving champion Thursday night when he won the 200-yard individual medley at the State Community College Championships. The 6-foot-6 sophomore, a graduate of Downey High, was seeded fourth going into the final but took charge of the title race from the start.
Richard was timed in an MJC-record 1:49.08, which lowered his record set two years ago. Wyatt Woodward of Palomar was second in 1:52.10. The Pirates' star will continue at East Los Angeles College Swim Stadium today in the 100 breast and Saturday in the 200 breast.
MJC also featured Alexis Wheeler, who lowered her own MJC record by a full three seconds to 5:10.09 and placed third in the 500 freestyle.
Both MJC 200 free relay teams qualified for the finals. The women finished 13th (1:42.96) and the men were 16th (1:28.63).
