Defending state champion College of the Canyons wins fifth straight men's golf event
BAKERSFIELD — College of the Canyons saw all five of its scoring players finish in the top seven of the individual standings with freshman Felix Schrott shooting his way to medalist honors, as the Cougars won its fifth straight event and improved to a perfect 43-0 on the season.
Schrott's two-under round of 70 marked his best score of the season and led a COC squad which played exceptionally well on the course at Bakersfield Country Club.
Cougars teammates Hugo Amsallem, Axel Einan and Matty Wilson each followed with one-under scores of 71 to tie for second place. That mark was equaled by Blake Bornand and Isaac Stone of Santa Barbara City College.
Nobuhiko Wakaari was just one stroke off that pace at an even par 72 to slot into the seventh-place spot alongside Igor Haenel of SBCC.
COC sophomore Jules Lavigne, who was the medalist at WSC No. 3 back on Feb. 24, shot a round of 74 to finish 11th overall in the field of 48. His score was dropped from COC's final count.
Canyons (355) was able to outlast second place Santa Barbara (367) with Ventura College (383) in third. Host Bakersfield College (392) was fourth with Antelope Valley (406), Glendale College (417), Citrus College (430) and Allan Hancock falling in the back half of the team standings.
The Cougars have won each of the first four Western State Conference (WSC) tournaments to lead the standings. COC also won the 16-team Riverside City College Invitational a week ago.
Canyons is back in action Monday, March 9, at Santa Maria Country Club in the conference tourney hosted by Allan Hancock.
