Roadrunners begin new conference golf streak

After 27 consecutive conference titles, COD lost a conference title in the Pacific Athletic Conference last year. But the Roadrunners started a new streak Monday when they won the PAC title in a 36-hole conference match in Yucaipa.

After a sluggish start to the beginning of the year, the Roadrunners began to roll early in conference play and never looked back. Three times the Roadrunners posted a team score under par. No one in the league was close to as good as College of the desert and head coach Tony Manzoni by the end of the year.

Of course winning a conference title is not the focus of the College of the Desert team most years. The focus is on getting to the state finals. That road starts for COD on May 9 when it plays in the Southern California Regional at Bear Creek Golf Club in Murrieta. If they can advance out of that regional – and there is certainly confidence that the Roadrunners can do that – they will move on to the state tournament May 16, which is being played this year at Desert Island Golf and Country Club in Rancho Mirage, just a few miles from the COD campus.

Anything can happen in the postseason and some team may jump up with a career day and stop COD. But for now, the Roadrunners can relax a bit knowing that they have started a new conference title streak. By the way, for the Roadrunners to match their 27-year streak, they would have to win every title through 2042.
