Cougar golf wins So Cal crown
The College of the Canyons men's golf team won its second straight California Community College Athletic Association Southern California Championship on Monday, besting the field of eight teams in the 36-hole tournament.
Canyons was the leader after the first 18 holes, then continued that pace to card a team score of 710, to finish 13 strokes ahead of Santa Barbara City College (723) and College of the Desert (725).
The field also included teams from Ventura, Palomar, Riverside, Santiago Canyon and Orange Coast College.
COC sophomore Eric Kim — the Western State Conference player of the year — was the tournament's second-lowest scorer, with two identical 69-stroke rounds for a total score of 138. He missed the individual So Cal Title by just one stroke.
Sophomore Sam Sloman placed second for the Cougars with a score of 140 (68/72).
Freshman Matt Murray (69/74) and sophomore Noa Yap (70/73) each finished at 143. Sophomore Clayton Chatterley (70/76) and freshman Braden Lewis (77/80) rounded out the Canyons scorecard.
Canyons previously won the So Cal Championship in 1989, 2012 and 2014.
COC will next tee off at the CCCAA State Championships at Kings River Golf & Country Club in Kingsburg on May 11.
