Three COC Golfers Qualify for California Amateur Championship
Three College of the Canyons men's golfers – Sidney Wolf, Michael Stewart and Howard Bernstein – qualified for the 103rd California Amateur Championship on June 16-21 at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad.
The three COC golfers finished in the top-6 of the California Amateur Qualifying Tournament at Crystalaire Country Club on Monday afternoon, earning a chance to compete in the state's top amateur competition in mid-June.
Wolf won the 18-hole California Amateur Qualifying Tournament at Crystalaire Country Club. The 2014 California Community College Athletic Association Individual State Champion carded a 69, after collecting four birdies and averaged -1 on four par-5 holes.
Michael Stewart finished the tourney in third place with his 72. After a double bogey on the par-3 11th hole, Stewart turned around and posted an eagle on the par-5 12th hole. He also had birdies on two additional holes.
Bernstein also finished in a tie for third with Stewart, after notching a 72. Bernstein had two birdies and eagled the par-5 18th hole.
The championship field will play 36 holes of stroke play at La Costa Resort and Spa. The top 32 players will advance from stroke play to single elimination match play beginning Wednesday, June 18 and concluding with the 36-hole final match on Saturday, June 21.
