East Los Angeles barking, Contra Costa soaring in men's basketball poll
RIVERSIDE - East Los Angeles and Contra Costa were the biggest movers in the newest CCCMBCA State Poll. Contra Costa, winners of three straight, are 11-2 and are one of just two teams in the Bay Valley Conference holding a winning record. Merritt (6-7), which is a ½ game back of Contra Costa, had its game at Contra Costa postponed due to COVID. Meanwhile, East Los Angeles is on a five-game winning streak after an impressive road 79-71 win against West Valley.
The Huskies of East Los Angeles climbed six spots, landing at No. 10, while the Comets came in at No. 13 — up seven spots from the previous poll
While San Francisco City and Columbia stayed 1-2, No. 3 Sequoias tumbled after experiencing a shocking 65-57 loss to 7-6 Antelope Valley. Sequoias, winners of six straight going into the game, appeared to be on a roll after beating the likes of West Los Angeles, LA Southwest, San Diego City and Ventura — all ranked teams. This week, the Giants fall to No. 7, just ahead of San Diego City and West Los Angeles at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively.
Preseason #1 Fullerton lands at No. 3. The Hornets last played a game on December 17. It has been equally as bad for No. 4 Santiago Canyon who also hasn’t had a floor contest since December 17.
Las Positas, winners of 14 straight games — longest win streak in the state to date, moved a spot to No. 5. The Hawks have had their last three contests postponed. If they make it to the floor next week it will be to take on No. 15 San Mateo.
San Bernardino Valley at No. 6 last played on December 18.
With over 170 games postponed and the season extended a week, the CCCMBCA poll will be held every two weeks for the month of January.
