LIVERMORE, Calif. - Feather River took the second game of the 2017 CCCAA Men's Basketball Championship as the Golden Valley Conference winner Feather River College beat South Coast East Division co-champion East Los Angeles College, 90-76, at Las Positas College on Thursday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles (26-3), seeded second from the north, will face the south's top seed, Fullerton College (25-6), in the semifinal round at 1 p.m. East L.A. finishes its season with a 23-7 mark.
The game was never any kind of runaway lead for either team, although Feather River did lead by 10 points with 1:56 left in the first half on the strength of balanced scoring led by guard Derrick Randolph's 11 points, Jamel White added 10 and both Chris McDonald and Calvin Fletcher had eight. Kevlin Swint was the leading rebounder for Feather River with four while Roderick Williams matched him for East Los Angeles.
Feather River shot well in the first half with 62% from the field and 43% from beyond the arc while the ELAC Huskies shot 39% and were just 2 for 5 from outside the arc.
There were 14 lead changes and the score was tied six different times in the first half. Feather River led at the half by a 49-40 margin.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles kept the lead and built on it up to as much as 16 points two minutes into the second half before the Huskies began to chip away at the lead. They eventually got it to 79-73 before Feather River put the Huskies away with an 11-5 run to finish the game.
The Feather River scoring balance was key as it had five players in double figures led by Anthony Smith's 22. Twenty of those points came in the second half. White had 19 and Randolph added 15. Both Kevlin Swint and Chris McDonald had 10 each. Smith's strong second half also included being the leading rebounder for Feather River with seven boards.
For East Los Angeles, Roderick Williams led the way with 20 points and seven rebounds. China Wami had 15 off the bench while Chandler Redix chipped in with 10 points.
