The awards continue to pile up for Jalen Canty.
The California Community College Athletic Association named Canty, a sophomore forward for the CCSF Men's Basketball Team, the March Athlete of the Month after a dominant postseason performance that helped lead his team to the CCCAA State Title.
The big man from St. Patrick-St. Vincent High School averaged 11 points per game, 10 rebounds per game, three blocked shots per game, and shot a highly efficient .667 percent from the field for the month. Canty saved his best for last at the CCCAA State Championship Tournament. In the championship game, the sophomore scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds. In the state semifinal game, Canty posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and blocked five shots.
Canty's March Athlete of the Month honor will now be added to his growing mantle of awards, which includes CCCAA State Most Valuable Player, Coast-North Conference Most Valuable Player, CCCAA State Tournament Most Valuable Player, CCCAA All-State Team Selection, Coast-North All-Conference First Team Selection, and CCCAA State Championship All-Tournament Team.
Head Coach Justin Labagh was extremely proud of Canty's Athlete of the Month Award. Labagh believes this is just the beginning of a bright future for Canty.
"Jalen was the best big man I ever coached. I am not only going to miss coaching him, but seeing him in the hallways of CCSF," Labagh said. "He's going to take University of California, Santa Barbara to the (NCAA) Tourney during his time there – mark my words."
Canty is set to attend UCSB next fall.
