The Long Beach City College men's basketball team continued its impressive playoff run with an upset win on Wednesday at top-seeded Mt. San Antonio College, 75-72, in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. LBCC will host East Los Angeles on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Southern California final and the winner advances to the state championships in Cerritos.
Four Vikings scored in double digits, while guard Brandon Staton put up a game-high 22 points with seven rebounds and four 3-pointers. Michael Shivers scored 11 of his 19 points in the second half. LBCC held a slight lead for most of the first half, but a Mt. SAC's Malcom Whittington hit a 3-pointer just before the halftime buzzer for a 33-30 Mounties lead at the break.
Long Beach City College retook the lead early in the second half, but Mt. SAC went up 55-53 with 7:21 left. Staton answered with a layup at the other end and after an offensive foul, Jovan Pearson's free throws put the Vikings up for good. Mt. SAC's 6-0 run made it a two-point game with less than two minutes left, but Shivers' layup stopped the home momentum.
