Little movement in JC Athletic Bureau and CCCSIA football polls; Riverside and San Mateo still 1-2
SAN MATEO - The top two teams held their positions while others in the top 10 moved up in this week’s coaches poll of California Community College Athletic Association football teams, conducted by the JC Athletic Bureau, as well as the CCCSIA poll of sports information directors conducted by the CCCAA.
Riverside City College (4-0) was a unanimous choice to hold onto the No. 1 ranking, following a convincing 58-21 victory over formerly No. 3 Golden West. College of San Mateo remained No. 2, leading the North. CSM took a first half 24-0 lead at No. 21 American River and capitalized on seven turnovers before allowing fourth-quarter scores, taking a 24-14 win.
Moving up one position in the coaches ranking were No. 3 Mt. San Antonio, No. 4 Cerritos, and No. 5 Laney – completing the group of still unbeaten 4-0 National Division teams. Mt. SAC, Laney and Cerritos round out the top five in the SID poll.
National (state championship) division colleges wind-up non-league play Saturday, before taking a pre-league bye.
Riverside hosts No. 17/17 College of the Canyons while San Mateo entertains co-No. 6/6 Butte in a NorCal showdown.
Top games this week (coaches rankings noted): Friday, Sept. 30: Fresno at No. 5 Laney; No. 16 Sequoias at No. 21 Diablo Valley.

San Antonio; No. 24 East LA at No. 4 Cerritos; coNo. 6 CCSF at No. 12 Sierra; No. 8 Golden West at No. 11 Long Beach; No. 15 El Camino at No. 9 Fullerton; Saddleback at No. 10 Ventura; No. 13 Palomar at No. 14 San Diego Mesa; No. 25 Santa Rosa at No. 22 Reedley.
American Division: Feather River (4-0), with a state and national leading 14-game winning streak, leads three unbeaten NorCal AD teams, all in the Pacific 7 league. Citrus (4-0) is the last remaining SouCal division unbeaten. The two “pacesetters” share the No. 19 state ranking this week. American Division league play in the north gets into full swing Saturday. In the Pacific 7, No. 23 Foothill (4-0) plays at College of the Redwoods (2-2) and Los Medanos (1-3) visits De Anza (4-0). Feather River got an early P7 league start with a 70-3 win at Yuba last week and hosts a non-league clash with West Hills Saturday. Citrus hosts Antelope Valley on Saturday.
