STOCKTON, Calif. – Second-ranked San Joaquin Delta scored two early runs against visiting L.A. Mission and that was all the Mustangs would need to stay undefeated on Saturday afternoon, edging the Eagles 2-1 in a nonconference baseball game at Nick Cechetti Field.
Delta improved to 7-0 with the win while starter Joey Skracic pushed his early season record to 3-0 by giving up just two hits and a run over six innings of work. Raul Rizo came on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning and earn his first save.
Anthony Donatella was the hard-luck losing pitcher for L.A. Mission, going eight innings while giving up just five hits and two runs – only one of them earned.
Delta did all of its scoring in the second inning, getting a one-out walk from Bo McClintoc and back-to-back singles by Kaelan Criso and Brett Young to load the bases. Braeden Oki then reached on an infield error to play McLintoc and Beau Philip had a sacrifice fly to right to score another run and help the Mustangs to a 2-0 lead.
Peter Abinan’s sacrifice fly to left with one out in the sixth brought in Sam Gray for the Eagles’ lone run. Gray had a triple to put himself in scoring position. Pinch-runner Mike Rosati got to third with two outs in the ninth after a passed ball and ground out but Rizo was able to get Tyler Grisso to ground out to end the game.
L.A. Mission, which was held to just four hits, fell to 5-2.
Four other teams in the CCCBCA top 10 won during Saturday’s action. Top-ranked Santa Rosa beat Canada, 11-3, No. 5 College of San Mateo improved to 4-1 with a 7-3 win over Diablo Valley, No. 7 Sacramento City College outlasted Contra Costa, 12-10, and No. 8 Cabrillo edged West Valley, 2-0.
Fourth-ranked Cosumnes River was scheduled to finish a three-game series at College of the Canyons but the game was halted by rain before it became official and was subsequently cancelled.
