State champion Grossmont takes rightful spot on top of final poll

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Grossmont became the first San Diego County area college to win a CCCAA state baseball championship on Monday as the Griffins were tabbed as No. 1-ranked team in the final California Community College Sports Information Association State Top 20 Baseball Rankings.
Grossmont (38-8-1) defeated 2016 state champ Santa Rosa Junior College (38-11) in the title game finale with the Bear Cubs taking their rightful spot at No. 2. El Camino, the 1951 state runner-up, had one of its best years since that season and was rated No. 3 with Ohlone, 2010 state champs, the other CCCAA final four participant and boasting the most victories in 2017 with 42 at No. 4. Regular season No. 1 Orange Coast finishes at No. 5.
The Big 8 Conference duo of San Joaquin Delta (36-11) and Sacramento City (33-14) take No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, while Long Beach City (30-16-1) jumped into the final top 10 at No. 8. Cypress (29-15) also made a big leap to take No. 9 with Palomar (32-10) completing the state top 10 at No. 10.
San Mateo settled for No. 11, followed by Pasadena City at No. 12 as it completed its best season since winning the state title in 1967. Marin rose to No. 13 joined by big jumps by previously unranked Sequoias at No. 14 and LA Mission at No. 15. Riverside City dropped from the top 10 to No. 16 while fellow OEC foe Santa Ana, the fifth place team from that powerful conference, climbed to No. 17. Glendale dropped to No. 18 with Cabrillo re-entering the top 20 at No. 19. Finally, Canyons hung in to tie '17 Cinderella story Los Medanos, both occupying the No. 20 rank. LMC, the North's 17th seed, upset No. 1 San Mateo in the early regionals.
