Cypress Eliminates Delta With 11-7 Victory
Fresno, CA - Cypress College starting pitcher, Andrew Quezada, threw 124 pitches to finish all nine innings leading the Chargers to an 11-7 victory over the San Joaquin Delta Mustangs, eliminating them from the tournament.
The Chargers scored in four of the eight innings they batted in, including three innings where they scored multiple runs. Eight of the nine starting Charger hitters recorded hits including five players with multiple hits. The Mustangs scored in four of the nine innings but unlike the Chargers they put up multiple runs in only two.
For the first five innings Mustang's pitcher Alex Dentoni pitched well, but with two outs and one runner on base the Chargers broke out with pinch hitter Santospage singling through the right side. With two runners on and a walk to Aaron Case the bases were loaded for Brandon Gonzalez. Gonzalez singled down the line which plated two runners causing the Mustangs to remove their starting pitcher. William Aguilar then doubled off relief pitcher Jacob Rosales and was thrown out at third base but not before two Chargers crossed the plate.
In the seventh inning Cypress was able to put up another four runs after the inning started with a double by Elijah Skipps causing the Mustangs to bring in reliever Calvin Riley. Riley started off with a quick strike out before things went downhill. Bo Coolen singled and advanced to second on the throw putting runners at second and third which caused Mustangs Head Coach Reed Peters to walk Nathan Rodriguez to load the bases. Paul Gomez doubled in two runs followed back-to-back bunt plays where the Mustangs' second baseman couldn't cover first in time, ending the day for Riley.
The Mustangs were able to push across a run in the ninth but was too little too late. Delta's streak of two consecutive CCCAA State Championship Games ends and puts the Chargers into tonight's late game.
