Today was one of those days where it was clear who Los Angeles Valley College's best all-around pitcher in 2016 is. And that person is sophomore left handed pitcher JESSE HOBAICA. He knows how to close games, he can pitch a complete game, he can TKO a batting lineup, and he can be as focused as a doctor in the emergency room.
Hobaica (9-2 overall in 2016), worked nine straight innings today as the Monarchs put the handcuffs on the Los Angeles Mission College Eagles 4-1 at home.
In his nine innings of work, Hobaica allowed just three hits and one run. Plus, he struck out two straight batters in the ninth inning; with the last Eagle batter of the game grounding out and then getting thrown out at first base to end the game.
Eagles pitcher ANTHONY DONATELLA started this game for his team. He worked six innings and allowed nine hits and 4 runs. At the bottom of the seventh inning Donatella was taken out and in came ZACHARY ALLEN. Allen in two innings of work allowed no runs and 1 hit.
Allen came into this game with a 10.38 ERA but the way he pitched in those two innings, it sure didn't seem like he composed an ERA that high.
The Eagles got on the board first when outfielder ALEJANDRO VASQUEZ took care of a double that scored infielder JOSH CARLIN to give them a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. That was Vasquez's 13th double of the year and his 21st RBI of the season.
But Valley countered with a JUSTIN GOOSEN-BROWN single that scored ANGEL ROMAN which tied the score at 1-1 at the bottom of the fifth inning.
The green and gold furthered their lead in the bottom of the fifth, when a squeeze-base hit RBI by JOEY HADDAD scored Goosen-Brown who slid into home base for a 2-1 Monarch lead.
The Monarchs weren't done scoring in the fifth inning, as ROBERT BERUMEN scored on a sacrifice fly by NICK ACOSTA which gave Valley a 3-1 lead.
Then in the sixth inning, HECTOR RODRIGUEZ singled in DYLAN MERSOLA to give the Monarchs further cushion at 4-1 at the bottom of the sixth inning.
Valley and Mission get together for two more games on April 28 and April 29 with the last game concluding both of their seasons.
