MASTROBUONI SCORES 3 RUNS, MAHONEY PITCHES & HITS CSM PAST CCSF, 5-3
PACIFICA -- Miles Mastrobuoni scored three times, including the eventual winning run in the fifth inning, as Coast Conference baseball leader College of San Mateo defeated host City College of San Francisco, 5-3, in Pacifica on Tuesday.
Devin Mahoney got his fourth win against just one defeat, pitching 6 1/3 innings of relief and allowing a single run. As designated hitter, Mahoney had two hits and an RBI. He singled home Austin Lonestar with the game's first run in the initial frame.
Juan Gonzalex and Bradley Degnan each hit sacrifice flies in the fifth, scoring Lonestar for a 3-2 lead and than Mastrobuoni to make it 4-2. San Francisco had its final tally in the bottom of the frame.
The Bulldogs got an insurance run in the ninth when Gonzalez singled home Mastrobuoni, who had a 2-for-3 day at the plate (including a triple), also walked twice and stole a base. Brian Ransom got his second save, quickly taking care of the Rams in the bottom of the ninth.
The Bulldogs are now 22-10, 14-5 in Coast North play -- 1 1/2 games ahead of ineligible Mission (12-6) and two up on third place De Anza (12-7). Mission is on probation and ineligible for post-season play. CSM, ranked fifth in Northern California this week, also has the best conference record among all 13 Coast members in both divisions. Ohlone leads the Pacific division at 13-7. CCSF fell to 6-25-1, 4-14 in conference.
San Mateo returns home Thursday to host Chabot at 2:30 p.m.
