Pirates continue to roll with wins over Citrus, Cerritos

NORWALK -- It was another very successful weekend for the Orange Coast College women's water polo team after notching a pair of wins at the Cerritos College Mini-Tournament on Friday.

In the opener, Coast cruised to a 14-5 win over Citrus. After a sluggish opening quarter, the Pirates (12-1) turned a 2-1 lead into a 12-5 cushion by outscoring the Owls 10-2 in the middle quarters.

Destiny Hernandez led the Pirate offense with three goals and three assists, while Kendall Chrisman and Alaire Thomas tossed in two goals apiece, while single goals were added by Kayla Yamamoto, Perla Estrada, Yuuri Yoshikawa, Journey Werner and Elizabeth Wilkinson.

In goal, Annabelle Sherman allowed just five goals with nine saves in a stellar performance.

In the nightcap, Coast took on the host Falcons, one of the top teams in Southern California. Coast jumped out early on the hosts and posted a solid 17-14 win.

OCC grabbed a 7-2 advantage early in the second quarter before the Falcons (10-2) got to within a goal at 10-9 with 3:30 left in the third quarter. But consecutive goals from Werner, Faith Cuevas and Delaney Lewellyn pushed the advantage back up to four at 13-9.

Cerritos kept fighting and got to within two on a couple of occasions, but the Pirates managed to hold them off to pick up the win.

Sherman came up with seven saves and helped the Pirates to their 10th consecutive win since their lone loss of the season, a 13-10 setback to Fullerton back on Sept. 11.

Coast will return to the pool on Wednesday, Oct. 13, at home, against Saddleback, beginning at 4 p.m.
