The Pirates' beach volleyball team had three pairs teams advance to the CCCAA State Pairs Tournament Friday at the Southern California Championships at El Camino College in Torrance. Savannah Marchese and Averi Carter, Alexis Baloyo and Amelie Zubia, and Amaris Garcia and Katey Mulville all won their Round of 32 matches to qualify for the final event of the season next weekend. Marchese and Carter also won their second match of the day to move into the quarterfinals on Saturday May 7.
Marchese and Carter, seeded No. 8 in the draw, won their first match against a team from Fullerton 21-16, 21-13 before defeating the No. 9-seed from San Diego City College, 21-16, 21-3, to move into the regional quarterfinals.
Baloyo and Zubia, seeded No. 18, qualified for state with a 21-17, 26-24 upset victory over the No. 15 seed from Grossmont. In the round of 16, the pair dropped a 14-21, 21-18, 15-8 decision to the No. 2 seed from El Camino.
Garcia and Mulville, the No. 20-seed in the bracket, punched their ticket to state with a narrow 21-19, 22-20 upset victory over the No. 13 seed from Long Beach. They then lost 21-13, 21-13 to the No. 4 seed from Irvine Valley.
The tournament continues Saturday May 7 with Marchese and Carter taking to the court at 9:00 am for their quarterfinal match. The other pairs will also have seeding matches in the consolation bracket at times to be announced.
