Men’s Soccer Loses Third Place Game Against Mt. Sac

TORRANCE, Calif. - The El Camino College men's soccer team lost 3-0 at home on Friday afternoon in the South Coast Conference Third Place game against Mt. Sac.

The Mounties (14-2-2) were the No.1 seed upon entering the tournament but were upset in the semis against Long Beach City College.  The  No. 3 seeded Warriors (16-4-1) lost their second game against Mt. Sac this season with the same scoreline from before.

Despite the scoreline of the game, it was a pretty evenly matched game between both sides.  However, Mt. Sac was clinical with their chances in front of goal while the Warriors were not.

Mt. Sac scored near the very start of the game as Edward Castro got the first goal of the game.  Jason Garcia had his shot saved by Luis Garibay but he could only stop it with his finger trips and the ball trickled to a wide open net for Castro to bury it.

After that, the Warriors had a couple excellent chances at goal by Andy Cabrera, Mario Carlos, and Carson Nguyen.  But Mt. Sac was able to double the lead 2-0 in the 9th minute after a goal by Jason Garcia on a shot from the top of the box.  If the Warriors finished their chances, it could've been a 2-2 game heading into halftime rather than being down 2-0.

Mt. Sac would make it a 3-0 game in the 54th minute on a corner kick by Paul Iniguez.  His ball somehow made its way untouched through the box to a wide open Jason Garcia who buried his shot in the corner.

Towards the middle of the second half both teams made multiple substitutions with the CCCAA Playoffs in mind.

Luis Garibay made seven saves for the game while Ryan Molina-Castillo picked up the win after making two saves for the Mounties.

The Warriors await their fate in the CCCAA Regionals which begin next weekend on Saturday, November 20th.  Based on the power points ranking formula, the Warriors sit as the third highest team in the So Cal region behind Mt. Sac and Cerritos College. But the seeding of the playoffs will also account for other conference champions of the region.
