Women's Basketball Loses Upset Bid against Moorpark in Second Half, 69-45

Women's Basketball Loses Upset Bid against Moorpark in Second Half, 69-45

Women's Basketball entered their Western State Conference game against #5 Moorpark riding a pair of 25-point victories and controlled the entire first half against the Raiders.  The Cougars jumped out to a two-point lead in the 1st quarter and held that lead, after the two teams played even in the second quarter, into the break.  However, Moorpark built on its reputation as an emerging dynasty.  The Raiders were the 2019 CCCAA State Runner-up and also the #1 team in the State before the pandemic shut down the 2020 season just before the State Finals, so fittingly they made significant adjustments during halftime. Moorpark burst out in the 3rd quarter and outscored the Cougars, 27-6, to blow open the game.  Cuesta got back on track offensively in the final period, but fell, 69-45.  The Raiders boasted four scorers in double-figures, while Freshman Forward Meadow Ingle (Paso Robles HS) came off the bench to post a team-high 10 points in the game for Cuesta.  The setback dropped the Cougars to 9-8 overall and 2-2 in the WSC.

Cuesta is on the road for two more conference doubleheaders next week.  The Cougars play the nightcap in pair of WSC men's and women's twinbills at Ventura on Wednesday (7 PM) and Oxnard on Saturday (3 PM).  The Cougars beat Oxnard, 68-41, in SLO on January 17, but are chasing their first victory against Ventura since February 11, 1995.  First-year Coach Casey Blair continues to hold the highest winning percentage of Cuesta's three women's basketball coaches and is hoping to break the 48-game drought during his inaugural season.
