COD Men’s Soccer dominates in lopsided win over the Coyotes, 5-1

COD (3-4) put two goals on the scoreboard early and cruised to a dominating win over a pesky Cuyamaca Coyotes from El Cajon team (2-2-2), 5-1.

Over the course of team history, Desert has had a hard time with the Coyotes, posting an 9-17-5 record overall against Cuyamaca, last defeating the Coyotes last season in Palm Desert, 1-0. Getting a win against Cuyamaca is never an easy task, but the Roadrunners made it look easy this afternoon.

In the 12th minute, freshman midfielder Emmanuel Muñoz (La Quinta H.S.) lobbed a pass forward to freshman defender Vincenzo Costaglolia (Palm Springs H.S.), who pounded a shot past the Coyotes keeper, giving the home side a 1-0 lead.

Moments later, in the 15th minute, the Roadrunners added on, as Costaglolia found sophomore forward Alejandro Pimentel (Thermal Desert Mirage) who threaded a ball through two Cuyamaca defenders, finding freshman forward Zack Edwards (Indio Shadow Hills) who poked a shot past a diving Coyotes keeper, giving Desert a 2-0 advantage.

In the 29th minute, the brother tandem of freshman midfielder Erick Guzman (Cathedral City H.S.) and freshman forward Leyver Guzman (Cathedral City H.S.) teamed up to work a ball up the field, past a whole group of confused Coyotes, lifting a pass to sophomore midfielder Leonardo Garcia-Guerra (Palm Desert H.S.), who headed the ball into the lower right corner of the net and giving the Roadrunners a 3-0 lead going into halftime.

A minute into the second half, Edwards connected with sophomore midfielder Lucas Rosales (La Quinta H.S.) right in front of the net, where Rosales punished a shot into the back of the net, to give Desert a 4-0 advantage.

In the 62nd minute, freshman midfielder Ezequiel Minero (Desert Hot Springs H.S.) and Edwards found Rosales again, this time about 12 yards out, rifling a shot into the upper left side of the net and giving the Roadrunners an overwhelming 5-0 lead.

With 10 minutes until another clean sheet for Desert, the Coyotes snuck in a goal underneath the outstretched arms of sophomore starting goal keeper Danny Negrete (Thermal Desert Mirage).
