Pirates sweep through GWC Tournament

HUNTINGTON BEACH -- The Orange Coast College women's water polo team went a perfect 4-0 this past weekend at the Golden West College Tournament, posting wins over the host Rustlers (15-8), Rio Hondo (19-3), L.A. valley (17-5) and East L.A. (forfeit).

In the opener against the host Rustlers, OCC turned a close contest into a blowout with a strong second half of play. Leading 8-7, Coast turned on the jets and outscored GWC 7-1 the rest of the way.

Destiny Hernandez led OCC with three goals, while Jillian Duwe, Faith Cuevas and Ashley Bellavia each scored twice. Goalie Annabelle Sherman was strong in net, posting 10 saves to earn the win.

From there, the Pirates breezed through Rio Hondo and LAVC, improving its 2022 season record to 11-2 overall.

In the win over the Roadrunners, Madison Colitz, Karsyn Barteau and Elizabeth Wilkinson each scored three goals, while Cuevas and Perla Estrada each added two.

Against the Monarchs, Hernandez and Duwe each scored three times, while Estrada and Grace Brossa each scored twice.

Goalie Isabella Goodrow picked up wins in both contests for OCC, picking up a combined 14 saves in the two victories.

OCC will return to Orange Empire Conference action on Wednesday at Riverside City College, beginning at 3 p.m. Coast's next home matchup will be on Wednesday, Oct. 12 against Cypress, also at 3 p.m.
