Rough day for Porterville ends with doubleheader sweep by Siskiyous

The rough start to the 2019 season for Porterville College continued on Friday. College of the Siskiyous came to town and put up a combined 25 runs over two games to sweep a doubleheader at Pirate Stadium. Siskiyous took Game 1 by a final score of 14-2 in a seven-inning shortened contest and closed the day with an 11-0 win later in the afternoon.

Siskiyous put the opener out of reach early, rallying for nine runs in the top of the second inning.

Porterville totaled five hits in Game 1. Lane Page hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second to bring home Jacobe Vargas and Justin Turner scored on a passed ball in the ninth for PC's two runs of the game. Turner and Vargas both hit doubles to account for two of the five hits.

Starter Luis Garay didn't last long in the loss. He allowed eight runs and seven hits over 1 2/3 innings.

Game 2 of the doubleheader got off to a much better start for the Pirates. Alfredo Vasquez was electric on the mound, as he struck out seven and allowed just a lead-off single in the top of the fifth before exiting after five scoreless innings.

But the game got out of hand in the seventh. A pair of Porterville errors led to a six-run inning. Siskiyous added two runs in the eighth and closed out the scoring with three more in the ninth.

PC had eight hits in the contest but left eight runners on base. Moses Garza and Page both had two hits each to lead the Pirates at the plate.

Derek Steidly II took the loss after allowing six unearned runs and three hits over 1 1/3 innings.

Porterville (0-6 overall) will have to bounce back quickly. The Pirates are scheduled (weather permitting) to close the four-game series with Siskiyous with another doubleheader on Saturday (Feb. 2), starting at 10 a.m.
