Women's soccer team scores five in second half, routs East LA

The Irvine Valley women's soccer team had its best win of the season on Tuesday afternoon at home.

The Lasers came on strong in the second half, scoring five goals, and defeated East Los Angeles, 5-1.

Irvine Valley won its second game of the season and had its third positive result in a row.

"They worked really hard," IVC coach Tom Lancaster said of his squad. "We had tons of chances in the first half and the mentality was good.

"In the second half they were fired up and scored a lot of goals."

The Lasers defeated Norco, 3-0, on the road last Tuesday and then tied Compton, 1-1, on the road last Friday previous to the Tuesday win at home.

The star for Irvine Valley in the victory on Tuesday was freshman midfielder Perla Miranda. She finished with three goals and moved her total of scores for the season to five.

Freshman midfielder Vienna Vargas and freshman defender Carlene Nhu each added goals for the Lasers in the second half.

And freshman midfielder Hannah Holmes set up three of the goals for assists.

Sophomore goalie Julia Butz, making her first appearance in the net on the season, had three saves in the win for the Lasers.

"The aim is to get a little better with each game," Lancaster said. "We are getting better tactically. We passed the ball well and really moved it around the field."

Irvine Valley plays again on Friday at home against El Camino at 1 p.m.
