Women's basketball team stays perfect in conference action

Irvine Valley's women's basketball team went on the road and picked up another important win on Wednesday night.

The Lasers went back and forth with Fullerton most of the game before coming up big down the stretch in a 75-71 Orange Empire Conference victory.

Irvine Valley, ranked No. 6 in the state, improved its record to 18-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

It was IVC's seventh straight win.

Fullerton dropped to 13-8 overall and 5-2 in the OEC.

The game was a battle from the opening tipoff. IVC led, 18-7, after the first quarter.

Irvine Valley grabbed a 30-22 lead with four minutes left in the second quarter, but Fullerton fought back to tie it up 38 by halftime. 

The third quarter had the same result. Irvine Valley opened up a 52-44 lead, but the Hornets climbed back and the game was tied at 55 heading into the final period.

IVC snagged its largest lead of the game at 5:27 in the fourth quarter (68-57).

But Fullerton didn't go away.

IVC led, 69-68, with 1:34 left in the game.

And then layups by Laser sophomore guard Anai Washington and sophomore post player Zoe Stachowski put IVC up, 73-68, with 27 seconds left. 

Moriah Serrano hit a three-pointer for Fullerton with 18 seconds to go to make the score 73-71.

But Washington hit two clutch free throws in the final seconds to keep IVC undefeated in conference.

Washington finished with 25 points, 13 rebounds, four assists and two steals. And Stachowski contributed 23 points and 20 rebounds for the Lasers.

Freshman point guard Morgan Higgins ended up with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals and freshman guard Samantha Uehara added six points and two steals.

Serrano led the Hornets in scoring with 17 points and Katie Salas put up 15 points.

Irvine Valley plays again Friday at Golden West at 5 p.m.
